On the 10th April 2020 we lost a resilient and inspiring mother who survived the traumas of WWII including transport from eastern Poland (now part of Belarus) via Iran and Africa to Cornwall, where she married her husband Jan.Their's was an enduring marriage that saw them move from Cornwall to London, where her husband started an engineering business and invested in some property. One of his houses was used to start, and became the social centre, of a new Polish parish.
Mum was chairwoman of a committee which organised the preparation of food, serving food, laying of tables, cleaning up tables afterwards, washing up and putting away everything. As you an imagine this required a highly organised mind and a very persuasive nature to make sure enough committee members with the relevant skills were available. There were always long lists of names and telephone numbers on fridges. This was Mum's database for the time when the inevitable call came in 1 hour before the start of the days event from someone who could not manage the duty. Mum would rapidly organise a replacement if possible and if, as often happened, she could not find one she would step in herself.
Besides her catering duties she would also sing with the Polish choir usually at church services and sometimes at shows organised in the Polish hall adjacent to the house. That choir has now evolved into the very accomplished choir known as Ave Verum . We are very grateful to the choir master Jurek Pockert who has kindly provided two pieces performed by Ave Verum for today's funeral.
